David R. Dowling, Associate Professor

Department of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Prof. Dowling started at Caltech in 1978 and continued for three degrees: BS in Applied Physics 1982, MS in Aeronautics 1983, and PhD in Aeronautics 1988. After spending one year at Boeing Aerospace, he took a postdoctoral position at the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington where he studied underwater sound and acoustic time reversal. In 1992, he joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Michigan as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor this year and is currently conducting research in experimental, computational, and theoretical acoustics, as well as fluid mechanics, and vibrations. He has authored and coauthored more than 20 archival journal articles, and more than 50 conference presentations. He has taught classes in acoustics, fluid mechanics, combustion, dynamics, and experimental methods. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Physical Society. Prof. Dowling is married and has five children.
