Abstract-
Fundamental to the study of bluff body flows is the formation of vortices in the wake. Of primary concern here is the interaction of this formation process with the motion of a circular cylinder when the frequency of the motion is near the frequency of normal vortex shedding. First, the basics of the vortex formation process will be illustrated using the starting cylinder flow. Then formation will be presented for both transverse-only and figure-eight oscillations, the latter being considered the more natural motion. In addition, the observed phase and mode changes in the wake will be addressed in terms of formation.
