Joanna Austin received B.E. (Mechanical and Space) and B.Sc. (Mathematics) degrees in 1997 from the University of Queensland, Australia, and a M.S. (Aeronautics) from Caltech in 1998. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories, Caltech, working with Professor Joe Shepherd in the Detonation Physics Laboratory. Her work has focused on the fluid dynamics-chemistry coupling in detonation, but also included characterization of detonation parameters in high molecular weight fuels, flame to detonation transition, ballistic measurement of impulse for high speed reacting flows, and tube response to detonation loading. Her research interests cover a range of fundamental problems in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and combustion, including wave propagation at microscales, high speed flows, and turbulent combustion.
